Saskatchewan Rural Municipalities have expressed extreme disappointment with cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline by U.S. President Joe Biden.

SARM president Ray Orb says the project was expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs and additional property taxes to municipalities in Saskatchewan.

“Of course, some of that filters back to taxation, some of our rural municipalities in Saskatchewan are going to be at a disadvantage because they actually would be entitled to more taxation on the pipeline once completed, and when it started operating,” said Orb.

Orb adds moving petroleum by pipeline is safer than rail transport.

He adds rail capacity is needed to move grain and livestock products to market.
