A major cleanup will be happening in Swift Current, as drought-like conditions turned to flooding Tuesday afternoon.
A late afternoon storm brought a huge amount of rain to the city Tuesday, leaving many areas flooded with water in some places reaching over the bumpers of vehicles.
Environment Canada’s Brad Vrohlijk says the area was pelted over a two hour time frame.
“The total rainfall we have recorded is 29.3 millimeters.” Vrohlijk said. “That was right on par with what radar was expecting. They could see more of it Wednesday as well as there are some cells in the area that could see heavier amounts come down.

Massive rains and flooding here late this afternoon. @City_SC @CitySCFire crews are out. I’ve connected with Mayor @denisperrault to offer any assistance that may be needed from the province if necessary. pic.twitter.com/HKAg4vNguW

Yvonne Haubrich works downtown and says it is a common sight to see that area get flooded because it is in a low spot. She had a feeling something like this might be coming as she looked outside before the rain started to fall.
“It came quickly and in sheets.” Haubrich said. “You couldn’t even see across the parking lot it was coming down so hard. I can’t even get to my car because its underwater.”
Swift Current’s mayor says his city definitely took one on Tuesday. has reacted to the flooding situation in the southwest corner of
“On some of our intersections their is water going over top of the hoods of some of the vehicles and some of our businesses downtown as well were impacted,” Denis Perrault said. “I don’t think there’s a storm sewer anywhere that can handle that much water so quick.”
Perrault said with the area being so dry for so long, it comes as a shock.
“I know everyone here in the southwest has been praying very, very hard for rain, and prayers were answered,” Perrault said. “I don’t think anybody was looking for this much this quick, but it’s hard to tell right now, everything’s draining and everything’s flowing.”
Perrault adds no injuries from the flooding have been reported at this time.
