Environment Canada reminding public of lightning safety

June is one of the most common times for thunderstorms in Saskatchewan.

We’ve experienced it over the last several days or so, and it sounds like there’s more opportunities for storms this weekend.

Lightning can strike miles away from where the storm is and can hit unexpectedly. According to Environment Canada, lightning kills more Canadians than rain, hail, flooding, wind and tornadoes combined.

Meteorologist Dan Kulak explained how it’s a good idea to have a lightning safety plan before heading out this summer.

“Keep in mind that certain places are better sheltered than others,” he said. “For example, your vehicle does offer lightning protection provided it has a metal roof.”

Kulak added how items with rubber tires like bikes and motorcycles do not offer any protection.

There’s a risk of thunderstorms developing in the province throughout the weekend. Once we reach the start of the week, it looks like we’ll get a break from the stormy weather as the clouds make way for those clear Saskatchewan skies.
