Sask NDP says early results of education survey are alarming

Using one of Regina’s newer schools as the backdrop, the provincial NDP says their education survey released earlier this month is showing the state of education is worse than what they originally thought.

Standing outside Connaught School, Education critic Carla Beck says the call has been made loud and clear for the government to start funding education in an adequate manner so teachers and students can succeed.

“We launched this survey because educators, parents and administrators were beginning to raise the alarm about a crisis in our classrooms while the Education Minister kept saying everything was just fine,” NDP Education Critic Carla Beck said. “Based on the results we’ve seen so far, describing the situation as a crisis is not an exaggeration.”

Over one thousand people have filled out the survey so far, which will run until September. A majority of respondents so far have been teachers and  parents, but there have been a solid number of staff, administrators, educational assistants and members of the public having their say as well.

Beck was joined by Sarah Cummings-Truszkowski whose kids go to Connaught.  She says it is frustrating to see one of Regina’s newer schools suffering because of the lack of supports being given by the government.

“Connaught was a school when it opened that had rooms designed for music, the arts, technology and other things.  Those rooms have been taken away though because classroom space is needed.” Cummings-Truszkowski said.” Now the school yard itself is seeing its space reduced because portable classrooms are being brought in. My kids are not getting the best experience possible because the government isn’t doing a good job in giving education the funding it needs to succeed.”
