Good news on the job front on Friday.

In June, employment was up by 9,200 jobs compared to June a year ago, with a record number of people working at just under 593,000.

Jobs minister Jeremy Harrison says the numbers are tremendous.

“9,200 jobs created year over year, 2,500 jobs created just from last month to this month, and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the entire country,” Harrison said. “The economy is absolutely moving in the right direction, creating jobs.”

Harrison says these figures show things are getting better when it comes to the economic storm we have been under for the past while.

“We’re seeing 11 consecutive months now of job creation, I think shows stability in the labour market,” Harrison said. “I think it shows growth in the economy, and we’ve been seeing that both statistically and anecdotally.”

Harrison said the private sector has played a large role in Saskatchewan’s growth.

“Largely private sector jobs being created by those who are working hard and creating those opportunities for Saskatchewan people,” Harrison said. “Government has a role in making sure the conditions exist for those jobs to be created, and we’re working with the private sector, working with job creators to make sure that’s the case.”

Harrison adds there are still some hurdles to clear before Saskatchewan’s economy gets back to the way it once was, but says that day is getting closer and closer.
