A new furnace rebate program from SaskEnergy is encouraging residents to make the switch to a high-efficiency furnace.

The new program was announced during the release of SaskEnergy’s 2018-2019 annual report at the Legislative Building last week.

It offers people the chance to help reduce annual natural gas costs from their homes going forward.

During a news conference with the media, Minister responsible for SaskEnergy Bronwyn Eyre talked about why they are starting this program.

“53 per cent of furnaces in Saskatchewan are still not high-efficiency, and so this makes sense,” she said. “SaskEnergy has done work on asking customers what they were seeking in terms of this kind of thing, and this was something that came back from customers.”

The program starts on August 1st and runs until November 30th, providing homeowners the opportunity to receive $650, or 10 per cent of the cost, towards purchasing and installing a new, high-efficiency furnace.

Eyre believes this will be the best way for homeowners to help reduce natural gas costs annually.

President and CEO for SaskEnergy Ken From explained how these furnaces will benefit homeowners.

“If you have a furnace that has 50 per cent efficiency, which would be one of the old ones still running, and you go to 97 per cent, you’re almost cutting in half the amount of gas you’re using for each home,” said From. “Instead of having half of that going up the chimney, it can stay there, and you’ll see savings.”

SaskEnergy estimates that 1,500 rebates will be provided to customers from the program.
