Sask. farming communities struck by hail during past few days

Hail struck many farming communities in southern Saskatchewan during the past few days.

Wiseton area farmer Norm McIntyre says crops around his farm were pounded by pea to marble size hail Monday morning.

He says the ground was white.

He feels some of the crops may recover but earlier drought and hail had taken a toll.

He says the area struck by the hail was relatively small, 5 miles east to west and a couple miles wide.

He says the moisture is welcome because crops had been suffering from extremely dry weather.

He says his farm has received about 5 inches of rain this growing season, with over 4 inches in the past 3 weeks.

McIntyre is the reeve of the RM of King George, based in Dinsmore.

Wiseton is about 300 kilometers northwest of Regina.

Environment Canada says Bengough had baseball size hail while several other communities had golf ball size hail including Crane Valley, Ormiston, Willow Bunch and Val Marie.
