Cracked axle to blame for 2018 train derailment near Landis

The Transportation Safety Board is releasing its final report on a September 2018 train derailment outside of Landis, about 80 kilometers of North Battleford.

The report says a catastrophic axle failure is to blame for the derailment which resulted in 41 grain cars going off the tracks.

Investigators say the first car to derail was missing its number one axle and wheels with a broken axle from the railcar was discovered north of the track.

The report goes on to say the track had been inspected just days before the accident.
