Riders get back to work with cautious attitude being maintained when it comes to Collaros

Zach Collaros was back with the Saskatchewan Roughriders when they returned to the turf at Mosaic Stadium following the bye week, but he was not on the field.

Collaros, who has been at his home in southern Ontario since suffering what Head Coach Craig Dickenson confirmed Tuesday was a concussion, is doing everything but practicing seeing he remains on the six-game injured list.

“He got concussed, so that’s what we’re looking at.” Dickenson told reporters after Tuesday’s practice.  “When you get a concussion it gets into the neck quite a bit and a lot of people feel like that’s what holds people back is the neck stiffness and pain. Any time you get hit up high you’re looking at head and neck just to try to work things out.”

Dickenson is optimistic that the situation is improving for Collaros, but they are not going to rush him back to the field and have him play Saturday against B.C.  (5 pm start, 2 pm pregame on 620 CKRM)

We have to be careful,” Dickenson said. “We know that once the symptoms are gone, you still need a couple of weeks on top of that. We’re still a ways away with him, but it’s good to see him back in the building.”

Dickenson added they will not bring Collaros, who was hurt on the third play of the season when absorbing a late hit from Hamilton’s Simoni Lawrence,  back off the six-game injured list early meaning he will be out until at least August 9 when the green-and-white are in Montreal.

When it comes to the tw0-game suspension against Simoni Lawrence that was upheld, Dickenson was glad to see the suspension get upheld and hopes it sends a message to players when it comes to player safety.

Some other notes as the team got back to work for the first time since being beaten at home July 6 vs Calgary

  • K Brett Lauther is still not participating in practice after suffering a groin injury in the Canada Day win vs Toronto.  If he can’t go, Gabe Ferraro will once again handle the kicking duties
  • WR Emmanuel Arceneaux was practicing with the first team offense, but Dickenson says there is no guarantee he will make his first appearance of the year Saturday
  • After missing the Calgary game, DB Nick Marshall was back and appears ready to be re-inserted into the lineup
