Emergency crews rescue woman from South Sask. River

A 42-year-old woman is being treated for minor injuries at Royal University Hospital after what police say were two attempts to commit self-harm.

Friday night at 10:35 p.m., Saskatoon Police and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the South Saskatchewan River near the University Bridge for a boat rescue.

Patrol officers, along with members from the Police and Crisis Team (PACT), the Saskatoon Fire Department and Medavie Health Services West personnel, responded to a call regarding a woman in the river.

The fire department sent out a rescue boat and managed to retrieve the woman from the water.

Following an investigation, police say the woman had purposely jumped off the bridge in an attempt to self-harm.

Around 30 minutes before being dispatched to the river, police had received a call to the 500 block of 25th Street East regarding the same woman threatening to cause herself self-harm with a knife. She fled from that location and had not been seen until she was found in the water.

She received medical treatment at the scene.
