Nearly 920 people caught distracted driving during SGI’s June traffic spotlight

The SGI traffic safety focus for June was distracted driving, and a lot of people were caught doing it.

The insurance company’s Scott McGregor says nearly 920 people were caught, with 800 for cell phone use, continuing a trend. “What we are seeing here is that these result are consistent with numbers that we have seen in other traffic safety spotlights, which just means enforcement continues to be strong on Saskatchewan roads and the continued awareness of the dangers of distracted driving continue to be necessary and important.”

McGregor doesn’t think the high number reflects the message about not driving distracted not getting through. “Behaviors and attitudes have to change towards distracted driving. The numbers here are reflective of how good law enforcement is at catching distracted driving. These numbers show that awareness and information are still very, very important at trying to curb these behaviors.”

There were also more than 7,000 tickets for speeding, nearly 370 for impaired driving and 590 for seatbelt infractions.
