Sask drought area continues to shrink

The latest Saskatchewan crop report says crops continue to advance with many areas receiving rainfall this past week.

Provincial crops analyst Cory Jacob says rainfall ranged from a trace to 83 millimeters in Sonningdale, 90 kilometers northwest of Saskatoon.

He says Glenavon in the southeast and Swift Current in the southwest had 38 millimeters of rain.

Jacob says two-thirds of the cereal crops and just over half the oilseeds are at the normal stage of development.

He says some crops are one to two weeks behind average development.

He says localized flooding, strong winds, hail and insects like grasshoppers and aphids were causes of crop loss.

There’s also concern about root rot in pulse crops.

Jacob says 13 percent of cropland and 24 percent of hayland and pasture have short topsoil moisture ratings.

He says the rain came too late for hay crops with below normal yields for hay, estimated at 7-tenths of a ton an acre for hay.

Twenty percent of the hay has been cut and another 25 percent baled or made into silage.
