Representing Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania would be nice, but if that shouldn’t happen, a baseball team from Moose Jaw consisting of 11 and 12 year olds are hoping for a week they will never forget.
The team is representing the Prairies at the Canadian Little League Baseball Championship which started Thursday in Ancaster, Ontario. Manager Tony Dreger says the message he has given to the team is that they deserve to be here, so results aside enjoy the experience.
“For some of these kids, this might be the highlight of their baseball career.” Dreger says. “We have told the team that all of the other teams had to qualify the same way they did and that is by winning their region which is something special so remember that if results don’t go your way. I had a chance to play in this tournament and I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s something I won’t forget.”
Dreger adds one thing that has really stood out as his team got ready for the event is the support shown to them by the community when it comes to fundraisers and other things. He says it isn’t cheap for families to watch their kids play at this tournament, but every member of the team will have at least one family member in attendance.
The team lost their first game on Thursday 14-7 to the team representing Quebec. They meet the host team on Friday.
