Sewer back up to blame for latest sink hole in Regina

The City of Regina says a sewer back up caused by mud and dirt is mainly what caused the latest sink hole to open up at Pasqua Street and Parliament Avenue last Thursday.

Director of Water, Waste and Environmental Services, Pat Wilson said because of the location, repairs will be fairly complex.

“There’s several different neighborhoods where the flow comes into that location into the manhole there, that makes the whole issue of pumping around that while we do repairs very complex,” Wilson said. “As well there is a number of utilities that are right in proximity to that, it makes planning extremely important for this location.

Wilson said there was also at least 11 homes that experienced sewer back ups because of this.

The entire area will be closed this week while repairs are made.

Wilson said they cannot allow traffic to pass through the intersection in parallel lanes to the work because of tire vibration.

Sewer services and other utilities are expected to be normal while repairs are made.

On top of the mud and dirt found in the sewer, Wilson said voids in the dirt around the sewer from extremely dry conditions on top of more corrosive sewage also contributed to the problem.

Another sink hole opened up about a month earlier at Avonhurst Drive and Elphinstone Street.
