Sask Party facing allegations of trying to sell SaskTel

The provincial NDP is once again accusing the Sask Party government of attempting to sell SaskTel.

This time, the NDP is presenting a report from the Saskatchewan Information and Privacy Commissioner stating that the Sask Party government made a secret committee to sell-off up to 50% of various crown corporations

Finance critic Trent Wotherspoon said he wants to know if this committee still exists, and if they do still plan to sell the crowns.

“On May 2 (2017), a minister of the crown, minister Harrison, claimed that there was no formal discussions going on with respect to sell-offs of our crown corporations,” Wotherspoon said. “That was the same very day that his government was entering into contracts with those looking to buy SaskTel.”

Wotherspoon said this government has been dishonest to Saskatchewan people.

“We’ve now learned that those proposals or this consideration was way further down the path than that government was ever pretending, and Saskatchewan people deserve to know the facts around those deliberations, those proposals, and of course that represents a massive broken promise and betrayal of Saskatchewan people.”

Wotherspoon said Saskatchewan people don’t trust the government with crown corporations, and he doesn’t blame them.

“They’ve been lied to, they’ve been betrayed on this front,” Wotherspoon said. “The Sask Party made these claims before the last election just shortly before betraying them with the legislation they brought forward, the proposals they were advancing to sell-off SaskTel, the sell-off of STC, Saskatchewan people have seen the Sask party’s true colours.”

Premier Scott Moe responded by stating the province has not intentions to the sell any part of the crowns, and have been that way since 2017. He adds the provincial NDP are using scare tactics that they also used in previous elections.
