Partnership set to offer management skills training in Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce and Southeast College have announced a new training program that will help develop skills for chamber members across the province.

Whether it’s training in time management or supervisory skills, members hoping to gain these skills and many others will be able to sign up for the program developed by Southeast College.

According to the college, the modules are offered as “one-day workshop style classes” focusing on a wide range of skills.

Steve McLellan, CEO of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, said this is a win-win situation for members wanting to grow their skill set and employers who are hoping to retain valuable workers.

“The more skills you have, the more valuable you are to a company, and the more a company offers for training, the more attractive they are to attract employees,” said McLellan. “If businesses are able to do better, they will be able to hire more people.”

The modules are spread out through different levels containing several workshops. The pricing structure is as follows:

  • Regular price: $349
  • Chamber member price: $324
  • Chamber member price for a group of four workshops: $1,200

However financial support will be available for private or non-profit employers through the Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant offered by the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training, bringing down costs of the workshops.

Canadian citizens or permanent residents are able to qualify for the grant.

Jeff Richards, vice president of strategic development with Southeast College, explained how this is not only a big opportunity for interested parties, it also makes it more attainable.

“Bringing in global-style training into Saskatchewan costs some money, and we need to understand that can get expensive, particularly in trying times in some areas of Saskatchewan,” “So what the job grant can do is help fund that and that’s what it’s built for.”

Small employers, considered to be less than 50 employees, may be entitled to additional funding.

The program kicks off this fall with classes in Regina, however it will be offered in other locations throughout Saskatchewan in the near future thanks to partnerships with other colleges.
