Premier Moe reacts to Ralph Goodale’s comments on provincial funding commitments

Three projects in Saskatchewan are moving ahead, but Premier Scott Moe says that’s all the province will be able to contribute until the federal government relaxes rules around funding transfers.

Ottawa has stressed the province cannot use 300 million dollars in designated transit funding for the community culture and recreation fund to support more projects.

Moe says he found it interesting how Regina Wascana Member of Parliament Ralph Goodale singled out both Wascana and Maple Leaf pools as the projects the province should be funding, adding there were 400 other applicants from across the province.

“That project happens to be here right in the city of Regina, right in minister Goodale’s riding,” Moe said. “I would just say this; those other 399 projects may not be important to minister Goodale or to minister (Francois-Philippe) Champagne, but they most certainly are important to the people that are living in those communities.”

Moe said while the city has asked for funding for the pools, they also requested funding for the Globe Theatre and to upgrade the water supply into Regina, Belle Plaine and Moose Jaw.

“There are many, many projects, I believe $1.6 billion if I remember correctly, with respect to projects that have been applying for this infrastructure fund,” Moe said. “This is a 10 year fund that has been put forward, we need to spread it out over the entire 10 years, and we’ll do so with respect to what are the priorities of the communities here in Saskatchewan.”

More projects getting funding include the Gordie Howe Bowl and the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan site in Saskatoon.
