City of Saskatoon victimized in phishing scam; $1 million deposited into fraudster’s bank account

It appears the City of Saskatoon isn’t immune to electronic fraud.

City Manager Jeff Jorgenson says a municipal check for 1.04 million dollars was sent to a fraudulent bank account.

Jorgenson explains the fraudster impersonated the Chief Financial Officer of a construction company contracted by the city and asked for a change in bank account information.

The next payment went to the phony account.

Jorgenson admits the checks and balances in place to prevent this type of scam was inadequate and stresses the city has internal and external staff reviewing this case in order to ward off any future attacks.

The City Manager points out they are working with the banks involved and City Police in an effort to recover the money but concedes that will be a challenge.

Jorgenson says a decision on any internal disciplinary action won’t be made until after their investigation is wrapped up.

The fraud was discovered on Monday.
