New students learn about school zone safety ahead of first day

Regina Catholic and Public school divisions teamed up to allow new students the chance to learn about school zone safety.

With the first day of school drawing closer, the event on Wednesday at Evraz Place allowed kids and parents to take part in a safety demonstration day.

New students were able to learn important lessons to help address some of the fears that come with the first day of school.

Regina Catholic School Division Transportation Officer Elena Chase said the event was created to help both parents and students.

“We really wanted to bring safety and awareness to students who ride the bus on a daily buses or even students who go on charter buses,” she said. “We’re talking about safety on the roadway and the sidewalk, whether or not it’s in a bus.”

Others lessons taught to the young participants that day included safe ways to get to school, including crossing the street, riding the bus and riding a bike safely.

But the kids weren’t the only ones who were taking in valuable information.

Regina Public School Division Transportation Supervisor Charlen Miller discussed how it doesn’t just help students prepare for day one of school.

“It helps parents let their child go that first day knowing that they already rode the buys at this event,” she explained. “It makes them less anxious with the fact they have tried it once.”

Starting September 1st, school zones will all be moved to 30 kilometres per hour, and it will also be illegal to make a U-turn in a school zone.
