A high school that is no stranger to being a city champion and have produced the likes of former Rider and recent Plaza of Honour inductee Neal Hughes and former Rider, Rider president and CEO and Canadian Football Hall of Fame inductee Jim Hopson will not be competing on the gridiron this season.
Due to a lack of players, Thom Collegiate has announced they will not field a team for the 2019 season which starts next week.
According to a media release issued by the Regina High Schools Athletic Association and Regina Public Schools, “Thom Collegiate did not have enough students express an interest in high school football, both in the spring of 2018-19 and now in the fall of the 2019-20 school year.”
Those who did express an interest can play for Winston Knoll this season.
In the 80’s, the ThomTrojans won three city titles in the 4A division and won two more in 2001 and 2002. They have not won a championship since that season.
Speaking with 620 CKRM on Wednesday, RHSAA Commissioner Aaron Anderson says this is obviously not what he wanted to start a new season, but they got by last year when Notre Dame pulled out for the same reasons. Anderson adds this is something he hopes is just a one-year thing.
“I can guarantee you one thing. This is on the top of my agenda when our executive meets next month,” Anderson said. “We are going to do everything possible to get the Thom Trojans back on the football field for 2020.”
