Those around Lumsden Monday afternoon got quite the surprise, when a severe thunderstorm developed and produced a mature looking funnel cloud.

A Tornado Warning was issued northeast of Regina around 5:30 p.m., although right now Environment Canada Meteorologist Shannon Moodie, said they do not believe there was any touchdowns.

“No we do not currently have a confirmed touchdown,” said Moodie. “We only saw pictures of the funnel cloud and only had reports of just a funnel cloud, there’s been no reports of a tornado yet,” she said.

Moodie also said despite what people may think, it is not uncommon to see severe thunderstorms or even funnel clouds develop in September if the conditions are favorable.

“Although the peak of summer is the most active time it’s not uncommon to see a tornado in through September,” Moodie said. “There was just lots of shear in the environment, so you had some energy for the storms to develop and the shear which lead to a funnel cloud,” Moodie said.

A much more quiet day is expected on Tuesday across southeastern Saskatchewan.
