University of Regina celebrates record enrolment for 2019 fall semester

The University of Regina’s enrolment numbers are on the rise for another year, his time breaking a record.

Nearly 1,000 students more students will attend fall semester classes at the U of R, bringing the total to 16,468, which is up 6.4% from the fall of 2018.

President and Vice-Chancellor Vianne Timmons said diversity is a strength for the university.

“15-16% are international students, and we have over 13% indigenous students,” Timmons said. “Our student community is so diverse, and that’s something we really honour and are proud of.”

Timmons said the two faculties with the most growth are science and kinesiology.

“It’s been a great start to the school year: on move-in day I met students from Italy, Holland, Kenya, and also from Swift Current, North Battleford, and all over Saskatchewan,” Timmons said. “It’s been a really fun week.”

With growth comes the headache of parking. Timmons said to help relieve the parking situation, she is hoping students are able to take advantage of the U-Pass system.

“We’re hoping that the students really access pubic transportation not just for the climate, but also just for the convenience, and so that U-Pass, I’m hoping will help with the parking situation.”

This is the 11th straight year that enrolment has increased at the University.

There is also a 5.6% year-over-year increase in credit hours being taught this year according to the U of R.
