This weekend saw the start of those beautiful autumn colours emerge across Saskatchewan. It literally seemed to happen overnight. As I was driving back home after work on Friday most trees were still a deep green thanks to all that rain last week, however by Saturday afternoon it’s like every tree in southern Saskatchewan changed colours immediately to boast beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds! It was also a weekend where people wanted to be out and about. Some were closing up the cabin, hauling in the lake toys, cleaning up the backyard, or just walking around soaking in the nice weather in the final week of summer.

I spent my Saturday at a wedding in Lumsden and the happy couple couldn’t have wished for a better day to get hitched. As I drove into the Qu’Appelle Valley I was left in awe at how stunning it really looked. The greens, yellows, and oranges seemed to light up the valley and make it look even more spectacular than it already is. And how about that autumn smell? There is nothing quite like the smell of September. Summer is going out on a bright note and autumn is arriving in its usual glorious fashion. Canada is known worldwide as being an amazing place to view autumn colours, especially Saskatchewan because of the untamed and unique prairie, coupled with those stunning sunsets we’re lucky to witness. We should feel so fortunate to live in a place where the world’s best sunrises and sunsets become the backdrop for the natural beauty of fall…and it’s all free to see.

It got me thinking about great places to view autumn in Saskatchewan as I drove into Lumsden. In my opinion, the Qu’Appelle Valley and Kenosee Lake will always be my favourite spots but there are many places in this province that offer incredible sights and scents of autumn.
