Premier Scott Moe addresses ‘the crossroads’ ahead of the federal election

Premier Scott Moe spoke at the Regina Chamber of Commerce Tuesday about the upcoming federal election.

Moe stated in his speech that the country is at a crossroads, and can either pick a path of unity and pride in the Canadian economy, or one where provinces only compete for their interests.

He said he feels there are areas of the country that are currently being singled out.

“We need to to change our direction from one that is singling out industries that are already among the most sustainable when compared to their competitors around the world and continue to do better in this province and provinces across this nation,” Moe said. “We have a situation where we have a federal government that has not advanced the low carbon economy fund to one province; the province of Saskatchewan.”

Moe said the recent western separatism language entering the fold is disappointing to hear.

“The fact of the matter is that over the course of the last century and a half, we have built collectively across this nation a strong and prosperous nation, a nation that I think all Canadians can be proud of,” Moe said. “Over the course of the last four years, we have had some policies that have come out, some of those have been very divisive (and) selective to certain industries, impacting certain industries negatively that are creating this type of conversation.”

However, opposition leader Ryan Meili was also in attendance, and says while the Premier’s speech was supposed to be about uniting as one, it came off as a warning to federal parties to let the Sask Party have their way or else.

“We heard references to layoffs in industries in other provinces, which is important, but nothing about layoffs in the uranium industry, or potash here,” Meili said. “Nothing about the threats to communities in the southwest and the lack of involvement of the provincial government in helping communities like Estevan.”

While speaking to media, Moe did not throw his support behind any federal party, but Meili said it is pretty clear Moe is supporting the federal Conservatives.
