Saskatchewan farmers faced scattered hail damage during the first week of September.

The chair of the Canadian Crop Hail Association, Rick Omelchenko, says there were 500 prairie hail damage claims in the first week of September, and more than 250 were from
Saskatchewan.

Omelchenko says the hail damage was across a wide area of the Saskatchewan grainbelt, but mostly in south and central areas.

Omelchenko says most of the crop damage was light to medium from pea-sized hail.

But he says the ripening crops are very susceptible to hail loss.

He says hail coverage has been extended to the end of October this year instead of October 15th.

He says farmers requested the extended coverage after late October hail storms in the Yorkton area last year.

He reminds farmers to leave a check-strip of damaged crops during harvest to enable insurance adjusters to determine the extent of hail damage.
