Citizens gathered at Regina City Hall Thursday morning to show their support for peace.
A ceremony was hosted in front of city hall near the Peace Fountain to raise the peace flag, marking International Peace Day on September 21. The ceremony was celebrated by activists and Regina Mayor Michael Fougere.
“We hope it serves as a reminder to all of us for the possibility of peace,” said local peace activist Florence Stratton. “We can do it. It’s political will, it’s personal will. We must all put an effort into it.”
While many Canadians are trying to figure out who they will vote for in this fall’s federal election, Stratton believes the leaders should discuss their views on bringing peace to Canadians and others around the world.
For her, it’s important to see if the parties make the topic an election issue during their campaigns.
“Diplomacy should be at the very top of the list of what they should be doing, not making and buying more weapons, but diplomacy towards peacemaking.”
Stratton and others are set to bring a petition of around 600 signatures to ask the provincial government to launch a peace studies program for elementary, middle and high school students in Saskatchewan. The group plans to deliver the signatures on Monday to the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.
The peace flag will fly in front of Regina City Hall until Monday morning.
