100 new trees planted in Regina on National Tree Day

The City of Regina is celebrating National Tree Day by adding to its urban forest.

The city, Tree Canada and CN are teaming up to add 100 new trees in Regina.

Deputy Mayor Mike O’Donnell says these trees will be planted along the Pilot Butte Creek Pathway. “Trails are important to Regina. People tend to like to walk, ride and gather with the community in there. So this is a really good way to keep these areas protected and have the trees looked after as people are going along there. It’s a good place to have them.”

O’Donnell adds that having trees in Regina is important for a number of reasons. “Wind. We ted to have wind here. We also have that notion of clean air and because we have nothing here, it holes the soil and so on. That was an important projection for council to do.”

He says the goal is to have 10 trees in Regina for every resident and the city is about 91 percent of the way to that goal. “This will help us get there.”

Spokesperson for Tree Canada Bill Knight says trees are important for lowering our carbon footprint, as well as for people in general. “If you think of your five favourite people and you want to do something nice for them, plant a tree. Why? It helps them breathe cleaner air, it helps create an environment in which you are comfortable to go for long walks with your pals.”

Regina says this grant continues the planting project that started last year.
