Snow and rain continue to fall in parts of Saskatchewan as we wrap up September.
Winter storm warnings are still in effect for areas west of Regina including Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Assiniboia, Leader and Shaunavon.
As of early Sunday morning, Environment Canada meteorologist Mark Melsness didn’t have official precipitation totals for the southwest. However, he believes around 15 centimetres has fallen, and more is on the way until at least Monday morning.
While the southwest region has been hit hardest by this winter storm, how are other areas of the province looking for the rest of the weekend?
The latest forecast from Environment Canada indicates a mixture of rain and snow for the Regina area. People can expect a little more rain than snow when the temperature is in the pluses during the day.
But that may change by Sunday night.
“We’re looking at fairly heavy snow possibly tonight, 5 to 10 centimetres for the Regina area,” said Melsness, adding that snow might fall until Monday.
And Regina may not be the only municipality that sees snow before the end of the weekend.
There are no additional winter storm warnings yet, but Melsness noted there’s a possibility for snowfall warnings in a number of areas around the province.
“Kindersley, Saskatoon, Wynyard areas. Maybe even pushing out towards Regina, depending on how things transpire during the day.”
He’s encouraging motorists to check highway conditions before travelling this weekend, especially if anyone is planning to head out west to Alberta where conditions are worse.
Winter conditions are being reported for a number of southwestern Saskatchewan highways including #1 from Moose Jaw to the Alberta border, #21 and #13.
