U of R professor comments on few federal leaders stops in Saskatchewan

With two weeks left in the federal election campaign, you may have noticed that Justin Trudeau, Andrew Scheer and Jagmeet Singh have all only stopped in Saskatchewan once during the campaign.

Meanwhile, the federal leaders tend to be focusing on centres such as the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Quebec, and the B.C. coastline.

University of Regina political science professor Jim Farney said there aren’t enough contested seats to make it worth campaigning in Saskatchewan.

“I would say 9 or 10 of Saskatchewan’s 14 ridings are pretty safe Conservative seats,” explained Farney. “You compare that to the GTA where there are close to 30 seats in play, so it makes sense there are politicians who will spend time where they can make a difference.”

Trudeau, Scheer and Singh have all held events in Saskatoon, not Regina, which is surprising to some considering the Conservatives, Liberals and NDP all have one federal seat in the Queen City heading into the election.

Despite this, Farney said he can see Andrew Scheer ending his campaign in his home riding of Regina-Qu’Appelle.

“If you look at the ridings the Conservatives are likely to do well in here, the one that’s really in play is Regina-Lewvan,” he stated. “Maybe they feel that Warren Steinley has enough oomph on his own to get them over the line there.”

He expects the leaders will stick to where there are more seats available, such as Ontario, Quebec, and B.C.
