The Saskatchewan Roughriders had a chance to take control of the Western Division, but the Calgary Stampeders had other ideas.
In a back-and-forth game, the Stampeders beat the Riders 30-28 leaving both teams at 10-5 with three weeks to play.
Missed opportunities and a special team gaffe hurt the Riders on this night. On the first series of the game, Cody Fajardo, who threw for 209 yards with an interception and a touchdown, had a wide-open Shaq Evans for what likely would have been a touchdown, but Evans slipped allowing the pass to fall incomplete. On the next play, Fajardo was sacked knocking the green-and-white out of field goal range.
Shortly after, a Stampeders kickoff took a funny bounce and deflected off the hands of Marcus Thigpen right into the hands of Jamari Gilbert who took it 28 yards for a touchdown.
In the 3rd quarter with the team down 27-18, Brett Lauther came on to try a 48 yard field goal, but the kick bounced off the right upright.
Fajardo hit William Powell late in the 4th quarter to close the gap to two, but the Riders defence could not get the ball back as Calgary ran out the clock.
The Riders will be back in action next Friday when they continue a three-game road trip in Vancouver as they face the B.C Lions.
