Pats snap losing streak with shootout win over Rebels

The Regina Pats slashed their 10-game losing skid and picked up their second win of the season with a 6-5 shootout win Saturday night versus the Rebels in Red Deer.

After going down 4-1 in the second period, the Pats clawed their way back to tie the game, including 6-on-5 equalizer from Austin Pratt with 15 seconds left in regulation. It was Pratt’s second goal of the game and sixth on the year.

Ty Kolle, Robbie Holmes and Ryker Evans all contributed with goals of their own throughout the second and third periods. Assistant coach Brad Herauf talked about how the team showed resiliency after they were down in a road game.

“I liked the way we regrouped. This group has been resilient all year long,” said Herauf in his post-game interview. “They haven’t quit on us once all year; it’s kind of like the motto to our team right now.”

After pulling Danton Belluk for the extra attacker paid off for the Pats, the two teams tried to settle it in overtime, but nothing went through.

In the shootout, Ty Kolle, Austin Pratt and Zach Wytinck all scored to lift Regina to a 6-5 win over the Rebels.

Newcomer Zach Wytinck, who scored the winning goal in the shootout, provided four assists on the night from the blue line, while Danton Belluk pitched in with 24 saves for his first win this season.

Herauf agreed that the leaders on the team helped deliver a victory on the road. “Austin Pratt and Robbie Holmes were huge, Logan Nijhoff being back in the lineup was huge for our team, and there are a lot of guys who weren’t on the scoresheet who deserve a big piece of this win.”

It’s Regina’s first win since opening night when they defeated the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2 at the Brandt Centre.

The Pats (2-10-0-0) are switching from indoor to outdoor for their next game when they play Sunday, October 27 in the 2019 Prairie Classic versus the Calgary Hitmen at Mosaic Stadium.
