Lack of workers at Regina-Wascana polling stations after Crowns and Unifor agreement

A bit of a situation in the Regina-Wascana riding Monday has caused some polling stations to merge.

While Crown employees received their new deal Sunday from the provincial Crowns, roughly 20 of them signed up to work at polling stations Monday, but are now unable to work.

However, Elections Canada spokesperson Marie-France Kenny said no polling stations are closed as a result of this.

“When you go to a polling place, let’s say my polling place is St. Josephette school, it’s still open, but instead of having eight tables in there, there might be only four.”

Kenny said while there may be a bit more of a wait, all indications are that things are running smoothly.

“There’s a little bit more of a wait, but not that long of a wait, and anybody who is inside the doors at 7:30 will get to vote,” Kenny said. “At 7:30, if you’re in line to vote, you get in the building, we’ll close the door behind you, and you’ll get to vote, even though it might be 8:30 by the time you vote.”

Kenny adds to her knowledge, no other riding in Saskatchewan has been impacted in similar fashion to the new deal between the Crowns and Unifor members.
