Drivers and pedestrians need to be alert while trick-or-treating: SGI

It’s Halloween, and the trick-or-treaters will be out in full force.

SGI’s Tyler McMurchy is stressing safety for both those celebrating the evening, and drivers. “Kids are going to be excited. They might not always be paying attention to those safe habits when they are crossing the street so it’s extra important for drivers to take care, drive cautiously around those residential areas or anywhere where trick-or-treating is taking place.”

McMurchy says parents should also talk with their trick-or-treaters before they head out. “Talk to them about the importance of keeping themselves safe as well. Trick-or-treating at one side of the street at a time, rather than crossing back and fourth between houses. I mean the house that is giving out full-sized chocolate bars is still going to be there when you get to the end of the block and cross at the cross-walk. Look both ways before crossing the street.”

He also suggests those out searching for treats incorporate something reflective in their costumes. “Or a flashlight or a glow-stick with your costume. That will help drivers see you. Always advise the kids and any pedestrians to stick to the sidewalks and pathways, stay off the street wherever possible.”
