The City of Regina says its construction season has come to a close with a number of major projects being completed.
In a media release, the City says it spent almost 84 million dollars on the projects and residential road renewal including
- Concrete and pavement rehabilitation on Lewvan Drive between 11th Avenue and 1st Avenue
- Sewer relining along 15th Avenue between McIntosh Street and Wallace Street
- Replacement of the two Ring Road bridges over Wascana Creek and repairs to the Assiniboine Avenue flyover
- Intersection improvements at two major intersections – Pasqua Street and Dewdney Avenue, as well as 9th Avenue North and Pinkie Road
- Concrete and pavement rehabilitation of Dewdney Avenue between Kent Street and Aberdeen Street
- Phase 1 Expressway Lighting along the Ring Road
Several projects will continue in the 2020 construction season as planned, including Victoria Avenue Infrastructure and Beautification Project and the completion of Albert Street South between the south service roads and 25th Avenue. Investment in the City’s water, wastewater and drainage infrastructure continues through the remainder of the year.
“Residents have indicated that infrastructure is a top spending priority, and this year we focused construction on some of our major roadways,” said Fougere. “The result of that work impacted residents and our goal for next construction season is to find improvements in the coordination, implementation and communication of the work to find efficiencies and reduce the impact.”
Residents have identified the condition of local roads as a priority for investment. This season we piloted an expansion to the Residential Road Renewal Program to focus on improving the driving experience of residential streets. Surface treatment reduces construction timelines and per project costs, allowing the City to improve poor quality residential streets an estimated 60 to 70 per cent faster than in the past.
In 2019, 25.1 km of residential roads were improved. Of that, 12.1 km of poor roads were treated compared to an average of approximately 2.8 km treated annually between 2015 and 2018.
“Our construction program coordinates the work of internal crews and external contractors to deliver projects valued at $83.9 million on our roadways, water, wastewater and drainage systems,” said Kim Onrait, Executive Director of Citizen Services. “This program also coordinates with the work taking place in our parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities to deliver a cohesive program as set out in the budget.”
