Poll suggests Western separation talk is still strong

The thought of western separation in Alberta and Saskatchewan remains high after last month’s federal election and its a thought that is happening nationwide and not just in the two provinces.

An Ipsos poll released Tuesday shows six in 10 respondents feel the country is more divided than ever. Ipsos spokesperson Kyle Braid says that sentiment is much higher here and in Alberta.

“Six in ten Canadians asked feel the country is more divided than ever, but when it comes to Saskatchewan and Alberta, those two provinces stick out like a sore thumb.” Ipsos spokesperson Kyle Braid told 620 CKRM’s Mackenzie Read. “Close to eight in ten in both provinces feeling like the country is more divided than ever.”

Braid says people in both provinces are feeling isolated, underappreciated and misunderstood by the rest of the country.

He says one part of the poll, which saw 1500 Canadians from coast-to-coast surveyed late last month, which surprises him is there is actually more support for separation in Alberta and Saskatchewan than what there is in Quebec which has constantly spoken about separation.
