The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) deadline to file post-harvest claims, production declarations and request an extension of coverage is later this week. The deadline for submissions is November 15.
Darby Warner, executive director of insurance with SCIC, said farmers who haven’t finished harvest can request an extension of coverage.
“If the crop further downgrades, if there are harvest losses as a result of being pushed to the ground or it’s hard to access during the spring, they would be covered under [the insurance],” explained Warner.
“It’s important for producers to contact us as soon as they have completed harvest or they can’t harvest anymore.”
When regarding settlements, there are a couple options for farmers. If some of the downgraded crop has been harvested, producers can get paid, request an extension for insurance and then the claim will be finalized in the spring.
Warner added that farmers can make a claim for wildlife damage. “Contact us to make sure we’re aware of it. There are some preventative measures we can put in place to minimize or make that loss go away so people don’t suffer a big loss.”
Farmers can also apply for an interim benefit through Agristability.
