Health minister says idea of “hush memo” is ridiculous

NDP leader Ryan Meili is accusing the government of trying to silence doctors when it comes to problems in the healthcare system.

Meili produced what is being referred to as a “hush memo” during Question Period on Tuesday.  The memo, issued in late September by the Saskatchewan Health Authority,  instructed Saskatchewan doctors to stop advocating for patients or even communicating with their licensing body without SHA approval, and to edit controversial issues from meeting minutes “if you do not want to see it in the newspaper.”

Health Minister Jim Reiter says Meili is a little off-base with his accusations and that any thought that he, the Premier or the government is trying to muzzle doctors is ridiculous.

Reiter, who claims not have to seen the memo before it was introduced in Question Period, says he will be sitting down with the head of the SHA, Scott Livingstone, to get some clarification on the memo—one that he says was poorly worded.
