Suicide crisis worsens at Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation

Leaders of a northern Saskatchewan First Nation say since declaring a state of emergency last week, eight people have tried to take their own lives.

Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation at Loon Lake made the declaration following three suicides over three weeks, including one by a 10-year-old girl.

Now there is concern about “cluster suicides” in the community, about 360 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.

The band’s CEO says there needs to be a regional strategy to prevent such deaths.
