Flames HC Bill Peters hands in letter of resignation

Bill Peters is no longer a member of the Calgary Flames organization.

Flames general manager Brad Treliving announced during a media conference late Friday morning that he has accepted a letter of resignation from the team’s head coach.

An investigation opened after an allegation from former Flames forward Akim Aliu that Peters directed racial slurs at him a decade ago when they were in the minors.

Aliu, a Nigerian-born player, said in a tweet that Peters “dropped the N bomb several times” in the dressing room during his rookie year because of his choice of music.

Peters had presented an apology letter on Wednesday which Aliu stated was “misleading, insincere and concerning” in a separate post on Twitter.

Treviling announced that assistant coach Geoff Ward will take over as interim head coach. He replaced Peters as the team’s bench boss during their game on Wednesday against the Buffalo Sabres.
