University of Regina launches texting and driving campaign

The University of Regina launched their distracted driving campaign Wednesday morning.

Students were handing out cell-phone cleaners with a simple message, “don’t text and drive,” and will later be introducing a serious of short videos over social media over the next few months.

President Vianne Timmons said there’s a serious issue across the province with texting and driving.

“It’s a big problem for society, for all people,” Timmons said. “I know that when I’m driving, and I look in a car beside me, I often see someone picking up their phone while they’re driving, so I think it’s a societal issue and our students can help get the message out, which is important.”

Timmons said the University is trying to take a proactive approach to this issue.

“We know about accidents that happen with young people, and it’s something that we want to be more preventative in terms of our approach,” Timmons said. “That’s why we’re trying to get it out, promote safety, to promote safety of our community.”

In October alone, SGI reported close to 1,300 drivers were ticketed for distracted driving across the province as part of the Crown’s traffic safety spotlight.
