Overcoming the winter blues

For some, it’s a magical time of year with the sparkling lights and the spirit of goodwill, but not for everyone.

The holiday season, whether it’s Christmas or Hanukkah or any other celebration, may only amplify the feelings of loneliness and depression for some people.

Michelle Buglas, a manager with the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s Mental Health and Addiction Services, suggests if you know someone who may be going through something, whether it’s the loss of a loved one or pressures of the season, reach out to them and offer your support.

If you’re feeling the pressures, whether it’s time or financial constraints, Buglas advises to stick to your budget and learn to say no if you don’t have the time to do everything, and reach out if you feel lonely or isolated.

A tip from Buglas is to write out a list of simple pleasures.

She calls it a ‘well being bank’. Bring out that list when the stress is getting to you and do one of them.

A few examples could be taking a hot bath, walking the dog, or connecting with a loved one.

Buglas stresses not to hesitate to seek help if you need it.
