Boxing Day continues to be important Christmas tradition for Regina stores

It’s set to be a very busy day at stores and malls in the city.

Armed with gift cards and money they received as Christmas gifts, shoppers will be looking to take advantage of some great deals on Boxing Day.

Some may think Boxing Day isn’t as big as it used to be with the rising popularity of Black Friday and Cyber Monday during recent years.

John Van Koll, who manages London Drugs Regina’s east end, said Boxing Day continues to be an important Canadian tradition for their store and the employees.

“It’s still one of our top days of the year,” he stated. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday are different because people are looking for gifts to give. Boxing Day is more personal because people usually come in with gift cards or the money they received at Christmas time and they can buy what they want.”

There may be some who are discouraged to go out on Boxing Day due to increased traffic on the roads and in stores, prompting some to stay at home and shop online.

Van Koll said online ordering numbers continue to rise – even at their location. But he noted that many of their customers prefer to touch items and gain knowledge of products by visiting the store.

Before shops open their doors to the public, he offered a couple suggestions for those who will be braving the crowds.

“If it’s really important that you get it – come early. Get here for when the store opens or buy it online and then come in during the day time to pick it up.”

Boxing Day is known as Canada’s oldest shopping tradition.
