Fatal house fire in Melville

One man is dead after a house fire in Melville Saturday morning.

RCMP and Melville Fire were called to a home on 6th Avenue around 1:30 AM. When they arrived, they found the home was fully engulfed in flames. Once the blaze had been put out and it was safe to enter, the body of the man was found.

CTV News has reported that the family has identified the man as 71-year-old Eric Backman. He was a longtime teacher in Lipton.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service has ordered a forensic autopsy.

At this time, the cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

Melville RCMP continues to investigate with the assistance of the Saskatchewan Coroners Service and a Provincial Fire Scene Examiner.
