Convicted child abuser in the U.S. moves to Regina under new name

A convicted sex offender and child pornographer is now in Regina and changed his name after being released from a U.S. prison.

The Saskatchewan Gazette says as of December 20th, the 76-year-old, formerly known as David Shumey, became David Stryker.

In 1999 Stryker was sentenced to 20 years to life after sexually assaulting a seven to eight year old girl in Nevada between 1996 and 1997 and photographing the abuse.

Nevada’s parole board says he received parole and was released in August 2018. The board states after his release he was handed over to immigration officials, with local media describing him as an “illegal immigrant from Canada”.

Local media reported in 1999 that Stryker was initially charged with 88 counts, but plea bargained his way down to one count of sexual assault of a minor and two charges of using a minor in the production of pornography.

Regina Police Service Spokesperson Elizabeth Popowich says RPS is looking into Stryker’s possible residency in the Queen City, but couldn’t confirm if officers were aware of him or not.
