Three charged after 227,000 illegal cigarettes seized by Yorkton RCMP

A four month long investigation has led to the seizure of around 227,000 illegal cigarettes in Pelly.

RCMP say charges have been laid on three people for illegal tobacco sales out of a business in the community of Pelly.

The investigation lead to six search warrants in both the communities of Pelly and Hyas

On January 2nd police seized around 227,000 illegal cigarettes, 25 pounds of loose leaf tobacco and just under $2,000.

Seventy-one-year-old Brian Clough, 25-year-old Brittany Clough and 25-year-old Andrew Popoff are all facing the following five charges.

• Possession for the purpose to sell unstamped tobacco products and raw leaf tobacco, contrary to Section 121.1(1) of the Criminal Code.
• Sell, offer for sale, or possess and unstamped tobacco products, contrary to Section 32(1) of the Excise Act.
• Importation of tobacco without a required notice, contrary to Section 8(1)(a) of the Tobacco Tax Act.
• Sale, possession, storage or transportation of tobacco that is not marked in the prescribed manner, contrary to Section 11(2) of the Tobacco Tax Act.
• Sale, possession, storage or transportation of tobacco that is not marked in the prescribed manner, contrary to Section 11(2) of the Tobacco Tax Act.

They will appear in Kamsack provincial court on February 11th.

Pelly is about 120 kilometers northeast of Yorkton.
