Eden Care Communities Foundation brings Adopt-A-Sidewalk program to Regina

A Regina-based organization is calling on residents to Adopt-A-Sidewalk for paratransit users.

Eden Care Communities Foundation spokesperson Bill Pratt describes how it works.

“We’re asking and inviting citizens of Regina, businesses, groups, schools, faith groups, service clubs, whoever’s interested, to Adopt-A-Sidewalk,” Pratt said. “The idea is that you will adopt a sidewalk and keep it clean for a paratransit customer who needs help in keeping their sidewalk clean.”

Pratt said there’s a great need for this program.

“If they have a medical appointment, perhaps like dialysis, or a blood transfusion, or need to get to a day program, maybe at Wascana Rehab or at the William Booth Centre, if they can’t get to the bus, then they miss those very crucial appointments, and that has an effect on their quality of life.”

Pratt said both paratransit users and drivers are looking forward to this program.

“We can’t ask the paratransit drivers to clear the sidewalks because that’s not their job,” Pratt said. “If you don’t have the resources or maybe a neighbor helping you out or a family member, you’re stuck.

“It is important that we take this initiative on, and we think it’s just a great opportunity for citizens of Regina to — as we say — ‘open their hearts and lift the shovels.’”

Those wanting to take part can phone Eden Care at (306) 206-0260. The staff at Eden Care will assign sidewalks in close proximity to those who sign up.
