Locked out UNIFOR workers coming to aid of sick Moose Jaw boy

There may be a sense of hostility on the picket line as the lockout involving Federated Co-Op and members of Unifor Local 594 stretches into the six-week mark, but there is some generosity emerging as well.

Carter Herman is one of the many locked-out workers. While walking the line, he spoke with one of the many truckers who has been coming in and out of the facility while he was waiting to get in.

That trucker told him about his son, 9 year old Easton Mengel from Moose Jaw. Easton needs to go to Italy to get treatment for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which is a crippling disease. The total price-tag is $40,000 with a GoFundMe page being set up to help with costs.

Herman told Easton’s story to his co-workers and they came through with donations in the $10,000 dollar range from his fellow union members. He feels this says a lot about those who might be getting a bad name from everything that has occurred during the lockout.

“This speaks volumes to the people. Everyone there has a big heart.” Herman said. “Once I got the message out there, it snowballed.  Our men and women who aren’t getting the pay they would normally get are still finding a way to help this little guy out even as they walk the line looking for what they think is a fair deal.”
