295 impaired driving offences during December: SGI

Santa wasn’t the only one watching for bad behaviour last month.

SGI’s traffic safety focus for December was on impaired driving, and spokesman Tyler McMurchy said police reported 295 offences, which he says was down from 2018. “Last year there were 352 impaired driving offences in the month of December, the year before that I think it was under 250. It can fluctuate quite a bit.”

McMurchy said police had their eye on other driving offences as well, adding speeding and aggressive driving once again topped the list. “4,722 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving offences and there were also 309 tickets for improper seat belt or child restraint use. It’s difficult to believe that in this day and age that we are still seeing hundreds of people ticketed for seat belt use every month.”

Fines for being caught driving distracted are going up February 1st.
