Prince Albert is the first city in the province to ban single-use plastic bags.

On Monday night, city council voted unanimously on the new bylaw.

This means restaurants, stores and other businesses will no longer be able to give customers plastic bags, with exceptions to carry produce, meat, unpackaged baked goods, flowers, bulk items, live fish and dry cleaning. Stores will also be able to sell packages of multiple plastic bags, like Ziploc, and garbage bags.

The city said after a six month adjustment period, enforcement will begin on August 1st with fines up to $1,000 for those who don’t comply.

The city said this bylaw has been in the works since October last year.

Council added that it’s meant to reduce the amount of waste in the city’s landfill.
