Hunter Brothers nab two of Sask. six Juno 2020 nominations

Saskatchewan will be represented at the 2020 Juno awards with six nominations in the province, two of them going to Shaunavon’s Hunter Brothers.

The boys nabbed nominations in the categories Country Album of the year with State of Mind and Breakthrough Group of the Year.

J.J. Hunter said the group is in Mexico performing right now and found out on the beach. “Our manager is here with us on this trip and he sent us the message after hearing the nominations. I think one-by-one, as we got into wifi service, I think the message came in. then e kind of congregated down by the pool and had a little celebration all together. It was a great moment.”

J.J. added that this is very humbling. “when you consider the amazing talent that’s from one side of this nation to the other, it is incredibly humbling that we would be included in this group. You work your hardest, try to do your best, put the best material out there as possible and when these things come it’s just a huge honour.”

He said the brothers have no expectations of winning. “There’s so many great artists making such great music and doing what they are passionate about. Of course it’s a huge honour when they call your name and win an award, but that the same time it’s not expected.” J.J. said no matter what, they will continue to make music.

Tuesday’s announcement also named the host and performers for the March awards.

Alessia Cara will be the host and is nominated for six awards. Featured performers include Jann Arden who is also going into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

SaskMusic president Kurt Dahl says the six nominations for a province our size is massive. “It’s huge for the number of people we have in this province. We have about 1-million people in Saskatchewan, that’s like a little suburb in Toronto in terms of population, so we do really amazing work in the music biz considering the size of population.”
